Western Stoneware Co. #6 Crock
Monmouth Western Stoneware Co., Monmouth, Illinois circa 1900's. It has their famous Maple Leaf logo stamped on the front. This wonderful large crock is 14" tall and 13" in diameter. It does have a couple of hairline cracks near the bottom and I can find one chip on the very bottom. But hey this baby is over 100 years old... I have a few hairlines myself.
Some history on the company: In 1906, 7 small potteries were merged to form the Western Stoneware Company, Weir Pottery, Monmouth Pottery, Macomb Stoneware Company, Macomb Pottery Company, D Culbertson Stoneware Company, Clinton Stoneware Company, and Fort Dodge Stoneware Company. They were in business in Monmouth, Il. from 1906-1985. Evidently when it closed 3 of the former employees decided to keep things going. They
have some of the molds and will continue operation as best they can. I have not read whether or not they were successful but let's hope that they were or are. |
