We have a friend who has given us the task of identifying an item for him, but we have no clue. We thought the oval thing maybe could be a step? There are no identifying marks on it at all. Help!

This looks like it could be a vice of some sort, because of the adjustment knob in the middle together with the flatter middle holder. That would be my guess.
