how much would it cost to buy a  john m. smyth rocking chair made sometime in early 1900s

That is a difficult question to answer as it would depend on where you are buying it. An antique shop will have higher prices than a person selling the same item on craigslist. Condition is also a factor, are you willing to buy something that is in less than perfect condition or has been refinished/refurbished.

A search online shows these chairs with asking prices from $75 - $850.

John M. Smyth Co. was a Chicago department store that was started in 1867 by Mr. Smyth - http://www.smyth.cps.k12.il.us/JohnMSmyth.html - in 1994 it was sold to Levitz Furniture and they said they would maintain the Smyth and Homemaker's brand names.
