I have an old  metal plaque associated with the Union Fire Ins Co. It is dated 1800, has an old (steam driven? ) fire truck a black background and the letters "U" "F" on either side. I retrieved it from a row home in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia. This site has a smaller reproduction of this item for sale. It is shown in the picture (#2). I'm looking for a resource where I can find out more about this item? It seems hard to find on the net.

I believe these fire plaques were used in the 1800's before there were municipal fire departments.  If you want fire 'service' at your home you 'subscribed', paid a fee and were given a plaque to put on the front of your house.  Then, if you had a fire, the fire truck would stop at your house.  No plaque; no water!

You are correct.

The original plaques are large so that they could be seen from a distance.

These are being reproduced in large quantities in a variety of sizes. An original will show rust and signs of wear.
